If the name doesn’t convince you yet, read on for more information.

Big Beginnings

Established in Peterborough, England, in 1932 by Frank Perkins – Perkins has expanded its line to include thousands of different engine specifications, sizes and uses.

The company was first founded to design and manufacture high-speed Diesel engines by Frank Perkins and Charles Wallace Chapman. Chapman was a Design Engineer and company secretary. He remained with the business for more than a decade before rejoining the Royal Navy Reserve though remaining a consultant to the company.

The Diesel engine was considered slow and lacking in performance during the 1930s. Chapman changed that with his new concept, the high-speed Diesel. He designed a new Diesel engine that could challenge gasoline as the primary power source. The company’s first high-speed Diesel engine was the four-cylinder Vixen, which made its debut in 1932. It was a massive success, and by October 1935 Perkins became the first company to hold six world Diesel speed records for a variety of distances and sales were strong. By the time of World War II, the company made two series of their engines, P4 and P6.

Consistent Success

Development continued and Perkins focussed on meeting stricter emissions rules while developing new series of Diesel engines for power generation and forklift trucks. Brands such as Dodge and Ford have fitted Perkins engines for more than two decades. Others like GEMA, Araus, Bernardin and Rotania used their line for agriculture.

A supplier to Caterpillar Inc since the 1970s, Perkins was bought by Caterpillar in 1998 for $1.325 billion, creating what they claimed was the world’s largest Diesel engine manufacturer. Perkins now has manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom, United States, Brazil, China, India and a joint venture with Ishikawajima-Shibaura-Machinery company in Japan.
